In our industry of fire restoration, we have many customers who had a simple accident turn into a major loss. Space heaters, stove top grease, and smoking materials are the leading causes of fires, so it is critical to take every precaution to avoid a disaster. Here are a few tips on safely lighting and handling candles in your home or business.
- Keep a distance of 12 inches between candles and any material that can catch fire.
- Place the candle on a sturdy and uncluttered surface.
- Always blow out the candle before leaving the home or going to sleep.
- Never use a candle if someone in the home requires an oxygen machine.
- For a power outage, it is better to rely on a flashlight or battery-powered lighting rather than a candle to avoid a fire.
