Tips to Prevent Water Pipe Repair During Construction
4/19/2023 (Permalink)
It's important to choose professionals who work around your businesses existing plumbing so that an accidentally flooded area can be avoided.
When building your Warren County business property, making repairs, or adding an addition, it's important that your plumbing is treated carefully to prevent potential water damage issues. Here are some tips that can help you prevent the need of a water pipe repair during the construction process.
1. Have The Area Inspected Before Construction Starts
Before you start construction it's important to have the area inspected so that the crew and any other professionals working on the property know exactly what needs to be done, and where any water lines are. If you find water damage before construction then a water damage restoration professional can help make those repairs part of the construction process.
2. Work With Professionals Who Can Take Appropriate Measures
It's important to choose professionals who know how to work around your businesses existing plumbing so that an accidentally flooded area can be avoided. Having a professional team who can perform a water pipe repair may also be important in case any previous damage is discovered. That way you can feel secure in the fact the team of professionals working on your construction project will know how to find and identify any related water damage, and make the appropriate repairs.
3. After Construction Test Everything To Ensure Functionality
Another way to help prevent a broken pipe is to properly test everything after any construction projects are finished. This will help you know any plumbing projects were completed correctly, and give you time to go over the proper maintenance procedures with the professionals that completed the installation.
It's best to have your plumbing inspected before construction even begins. Many recommend working with professionals who have the ability to take care of any potential water pipe repair needs, and testing the plumbing functionality as construction wraps up. If you do experience flooding, a professional water damage restoration service may be able to help.

Large Loss Apartment Building in Warren County
1/27/2022 (Permalink)
Recently our crews spent over 48 hours on site for a large water loss in an apartment complex.
In normal times, this would be a routine loss for our team but after suffering tornadoes in 3 of our 5 Counties, many buildings are only tarped making it nearly impossible to keep water lines from freezing.
This particular apartment complex had damage to roof from the storms in one corner unit on the third floor and had been tarped. However, due to the fact that there were other tenants in the same building, fire code required that the sprinklers stay active. It was one of these sprinkler heads in the affected unit that froze and burst. Once we did the mitigation and had equipment in place, the fire department turned the sprinklers back on. The temperatures plunged again and the sprinkler heads burst again causing us to have to extract, check equipment and start again.
We stayed the course and did the job! We have such a strong team and I am very proud of all the work they have been doing during this difficult time. #SERVPROstrong #teammoody

How To Get Mold Insurance Coverage
1/9/2020 (Permalink)
Moldy office in Alvaton, KY
How To Get Mold Insurance Coverage
You have probably heard horror stories about mold destroying properties. Without proper insurance, your company could have to use its profits to pay for mold remediation services.
That is why you need to make sure you have proper insurance coverage. Mold insurance claims can help pay for the following:
- Property damage
- Mold cleanup and restoration costs
- Bodily injury
Unfortunately, general commercial liability insurance does not always cover mold damage. However, you may be able to add mold coverage to your policy.
Mold Insurance
Some general property or liability insurance policies do cover mold, but the coverage is usually limited. Oftentimes, they don’t even cover the cost of remediation or investigation.
However, your pollution liability policy may allow you to file a mold claim. You can also add mold coverage to this pollution insurance.
Mold Management
Even if you do have proper insurance, there is no guarantee that the insurer will pay for the mold damage. If you do not take proper steps to mitigate the spread of the fungus, your mold insurance claims could be denied.
To prevent this from happening, make sure your Alvaton, KY, business has a mold management plan. You should have policies in place to both prevent mold growth and address any visible signs of the fungus.
Keep in mind that mold can appear just 24 to 72 hours after water damage occurs. Any floods or leaks must be cleaned up immediately to ensure the insurance provider accepts your claim.
Filing Your Claim
After the mold strikes, you should contact your provider to find out the type of coverage you have. You should also pick black mold cleanup specialists who work with the insurance company. This will make the mold insurance claims process less stressful for you and your business.
You don’t want to be stuck without insurance when a mold disaster strikes. You should thus make sure that mold coverage is part of your commercial policy.
Preventing Frozen Pipes This Winter
1/9/2020 (Permalink)
Insulate pipes that pass through unheated areas of the building
As the weather turns colder and the snow piles up, it’s important to understand how the changing seasons affect your facility’s maintenance routine. Winter poses different hazards and there are different methods of preventing them. Keeping your building warm and dry means understanding these risks and doing the work that will protect you from them. Let’s talk about how to prevent frozen pipes, which can burst and lead to water damage indoors.
Tips for Preventing Pipe Freezing
Use the following tips to help prevent issues with pipes freezing:
- Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night.
- Add insulation to crawlspaces and utility access areas.
- Insulate pipes that pass through unheated areas of the building.
- Increase ventilation to pipes in kitchen and bathroom areas.
The general rule you want to follow is this simple: Making sure your pipes receive the benefit of your regular HVAC climate controls will prevent ice from forming in them. That’s why it’s important to check on insulation and to keep your temperature controls at a reasonable setting day and night. Temperature fluctuations in the main work areas are amplified in crawl spaces and other less-insulated parts of the building.
Pipes Freezing in Extreme Temperatures
No matter how hard you try to prevent frozen pipes in Smiths Grove, KY the winter weather occasionally just throws you a curveball. That means there’s a chance an extreme cold period could overcome your prevention measures, especially if that cold snap is more drastic and longer than usual for Smiths Grove, KY. When that happens, it’s important to have an emergency plan.
This emergency plan needs to include local restoration experts who know how to deal with a burst pipe, so you know that you will get help with cleanup and with water line repair afterward. If you work with your insurance company and plan, it’s easy to make sure your choice will be covered, too, so you have an easy-to-follow plan of action when an emergency strikes that will help your facility bounce back after an emergency.
3 Ways To Contribute to Urban Flooding Prevention at Your Business
12/31/2019 (Permalink)
High water levels can damage your Alvaton, KY commercial property
3 Ways To Contribute to Urban Flooding Prevention at Your Business
Violent storms and several consecutive days of flooding in Alvaton, KY, can cause problems like high water levels and damage to your commercial building. When this occurs, you might face problems such as poor water drainage, serious flooding in the basement and first floor and damage to equipment and inventory. However, you may be able to avoid these issues by contributing to your city’s urban flood prevention plan, and there are several ways you can accomplish this.
1. Cultivate a Rooftop Garden
If your commercial building has a flat roof, it could be prone to water retention. If rain remains consistent over several days, this could cause the weight of gathered water to damage the roof, especially if the drainage system or gutters are not effective. Creating a rooftop garden could help absorb rainwater and utilize it in a way that is healthy and positive. The absorption might also reduce runoff, and a garden creates a space that everyone can enjoy.
2. Gather and Reuse Rainwater Runoff
You may be able to stop flooding issues around the perimeter of your building and lower the risk of local water damage by installing rain-catching systems. You can either purchase these at your local home improvement store or create your own with large, sturdy barrels and PVC piping. During a storm, rainwater will filter into these containers, which you can then use to water the trees and other vegetation around your building. While this might not stop flooding or high water levels completely, it may have a positive effect on flood problems on your street.
3. Have Your Sewer System Inspected
Flood prevention can come in many forms, and one that you may not have considered is keeping your building’s sewer system in good condition. Flooding can have a serious impact on buildings that have poor sewage and drainage systems, so you may want to contact a flood damage and restoration service for advice about how to have your sewage pipes checked.
High water levels and other types of flooding can damage your Alvaton, KY, commercial property. Knowing how to contain flooding may protect your building and contribute to your city’s flood prevention plan.
Detecting and Confronting Common Water Losses

Leaking water from a kitchen faucet
Businesses in Plano, KY, greatly depend on water for a variety of purposes, from plumbing to equipment function. This also means that water is present everywhere, and that any type of malfunction, such as damaged pipes or a defective roof, can lead to a large loss for your business. Due to the prominence of water, leaks are the most common type of business loss, so you might benefit from learning how to resolve and prevent them from occurring.
Most Covered Water Losses
Insurance policies mostly cover water incidents that involve water leaks and exclude ones that involve large quantities of water, such as flooding, natural disasters or surface water. Covered losses can occur from surprise or sudden events, including burst pipes or erratic fire suppression equipment. An insurance plan can generally cover the costs involving the repair of the property. It can also cover the fire system's repair if it is the source of the leak. Damage to the building itself is also part of the water loss.
Causes of Water Leaks
These water losses occur due to a variety of potential scenarios.
- Broken or damaged pipes
- Defective fire sprinklers
- Malfunctioning equipment
- Faulty roofing
As a commercial property owner, you might need to pay attention to these causes to prevent a future water loss. Ensure that maintenance is performed to your business equipment, fire sprinklers or piping system to prevent leaking pipes and other disasters that can lead to a business loss.
Resolving Water Losses
If you find a water leak in the building, locate the source and shut off the water immediately. Make sure to contact emergency restoration services to control and repair the damage present in your property. Check the insurance plan to be sure it covers this specific incident.
Water leaks have numerous causes, from damaged pipes to compromised roofing, and are the most common form of business loss. Protect your Plano, KY, business from water loss by preventing potential issues, hiring damage remediation specialists and consulting your insurance.
Do Not Expect Aerosol Spray To Eliminate Smoke Odor

Smoke Cleaning Done By Professionals In Three Steps
If your Alvaton, KY, business experiences a fire, get ready for an education. First, there is the fire damage caused by the flames. Next, there is water damage caused by fire suppression. Finally, there is smoke damage. Smoke cleaning requires trained fire and smoke remediation professionals who bring their experience and specialized equipment to the job.
Fires fill the air with particulates that leave residue in difficult-to-reach places. Smoke cleaning involves the removal or neutralization of this residue. Trained professionals do this in three steps.
1. Eliminate Airborne Smoke and Soot.
This effort starts while the fire is still in progress. The fire department vents the structure with high-capacity fans to remove smoke. This should continue once the firefighters leave. Fans and filtration equipment will remove many of the particulates before they become residue.
The next step is to remove the contents of the building. Check each item and subject it to one of the following three actions:
- Dispose of contaminated items like fabrics and carpets when that makes sense.
- Send other contaminated items out for restoration.
- Move uncontaminated items to an uncontaminated off-site area.
2. Install Ozone Generators and Flood the Building Interior With Ozone.
Ozone is a toxic form of oxygen and is effective at neutralizing smoke residue. The goal is to run the ozone generators for an extended period. During this time, the ozone will neutralize all the residue it comes into contact with. Because ozone is toxic, the building must be unoccupied during this process.
3. Deodorize the Building With a Thermal Fogger.
Ozone will not neutralize all the residue. Nothing short of demolishing the building will do that. For this reason, the final step in smoke odor removal is to deodorize the building using a thermal fogger. This device overlays the remaining residual odors with a fresh, clean smell.
Once the smoke cleaning process is complete, your business is ready to move beyond the fire. Thanks to the efforts of these cleaning professionals, your business will continue beyond the fire “Like it never even happened.”

Four Common Questions About Mold
When commercial property owners notice mold growth in their buildings, it is reasonable to panic, but it is not always necessary. However, if you are currently experiencing a mold problem, you likely have a few questions. Therefore, to help ease your mind, the below list is a compilation of the four most common questions about mold.
1. Is Mold Toxic?
There are variations of mold, and some of them are toxic while others aren't. Most common funguses are not poisonous and will not negatively impact health unless you are exposed to high levels for prolonged periods of time. Therefore, quick remediation is always best.
2. How Fast Does Mold Spread?
Mold growth can begin within 24 to 48 hours of water damage, and it will continue to spread rapidly after that if not remediated. Also, mold is not limited to only water damaged areas. Spores can spread throughout your property through ventilation systems, contaminating multiple areas at a time.
3. What Are the Primary Causes of Mold?
High humidity and moisture or water damage are the primary causes of mold development. Spores exist everywhere, and there is no way around that, but to grow fungus needs water and moisture.
4. How Does the Remediation Process Work?
When hiring a mold remediation specialist in the Smiths, KY, area, keep in mind that it is a five-level process: (1) protection, (2) containment, (3) tear out, (4) cleaning and disinfecting and (5) salvage and restoration. While containment and tear out are the most significant parts of the remediation process due to actual mold removal, each level builds on the next to ensure the safety of your building, tenants and yourself.
Mold growth is a real concern for many property owners. However, the fears can be minimized if you take action when you encounter a problem and call in a specialist. The number of mold varieties and the possibility of spread means that calling in professionals may be the only responsible action to take.
How to Safely Approach the Cleanup Process After an Electrical Fire
1/12/2019 (Permalink)
Smoke damage on electronics in Bowling Green, KY
It is a common misconception that an electrical fire can only take place in an old building. Aged wiring and damaged outlets are often blamed for the ignition of these dangerous fiery outbreaks. But old wires are not the sole cause of electrical fires. Learn how these fires can start, and what to do after a fire has occurred at your Bowling Green, KY facility.
Prevent Fires by Identifying Electrical Hazards
The best way to avoid a commercial fire incident is to watch for the telltale signs of danger. Before an electrical fire breaks out, some recognizable indicators of electrical hazards may be lurking below the surface. Watch for these key indicators of electrical problems:
- Frequent breaker overload
- Hot or smoking light fixtures
- Sparks from electrical outlets
- Loud popping sounds when turning on or plugging-in an appliance
Approach Cleanup With Caution
If your commercial business has fallen victim to a workplace fire you should begin the cleanup process immediately, but approach with caution. Hiring a fire cleanup crew is the surest way to protect and possibly save electronics that have taken fire damage. Electronic devices and machinery are very susceptible to irreversible damage from flames, smoke and soot. Avoid operating or turning on any electrical device that may have been exposed during the fire. Wiring that has been burned or received smoke damage could be at risk for further danger. Stay safe by hiring professionals.
Seek Electronic Restoration
When looking to clean and restore workplace belongings and electronics, professional fire restoration services are essential. Electrical devices require special care to prevent further damage or total loss. A restoration team can evaluate the effectiveness of computer cleanup efforts and determine what is salvageable. Removing ashes and smoke from electronics requires special equipment and qualified expertise.
After an electrical fire, the cleanup process should be left in the fit hands of trained professionals. Working with the right tools and know-how, these experts can address all of your commercial fire concerns and restore a clean and safe environment.

Pipe burst causing water to cover the classroom in Plano,NY
An Undetected Pipe Break or Water Leak Could Cost You Thousands Each Year
If you own a business in Plano, KY, you're probably always looking for ways to maximize your revenue stream. One big way to save on expenses is to prevent leaks in your building. Did you know that an undetected pipe break or water leak could potentially cost you thousands each year? Below, we'll examine the most likely causes of leakage and what to do about them.
1. Outside Spigots
These are easy to forget. A leaking spigot on the outside of your building can not only be wasting water (and money), but could actually cause water damage to the building's foundation.
2. Leaky Toilets
You could lose up to 73,000 gallons of water from a leaky toilet in one year. If your building has several toilets, you could be losing a lot more. By simply replacing worn-out gaskets and flanges, this water loss can be easily prevented.
3. Faucet Leaks
A water leak from a single dripping faucet can use more than 20 gallons of water in a day. Think of how much you're losing if you have three or four sinks on every floor! You could save a lot of money by just by inspecting the taps and replacing some washers.
4. Water Heaters
A water heater with a slow leak is something that might go undetected for a long time. Not only does this waste a great deal of water, but it could cause damage to the saturated areas on the adjacent floor and walls. Additional secondary damage could come from mold and mildew.
5. Hidden Pipe Damage
A pipe break is not always so obvious; if the breakage is hidden behind a wall or floor, you're not going to see it. That's why it's a good idea to get an inspection done by a water mitigation professional at least once a year.
If left unchecked, a water leak can waste a good deal of money and cause a lot of headaches. The good news is that you can prevent a leak from happening by just paying attention to the likely suspects listed above.
4 Cost-Effective Ways To Flood-Proof Your Building

Sump pumps can save your Smiths,KY building from flooding
Most commercial building owners in Smiths, KY, hate seeing flood damage every time a storm passes through the area. Thankfully, you don't have to resign yourself to this type of damage. You can work with a commercial water damage team to flood-proof your building.
1. Install a pump
Putting in a sump pump can save your building from a lot of flooding. A sump pump removes water from basements by pulling water out of sump basins. This type of equipment is popular in properties that have lower levels below the ground water level.
2. Put up barriers
If enough warning is given before a storm, you can choose to set up barriers. In many areas, sand bags can be used to direct water away from a building's foundation. While this can be a good solution to ward off flood damage, it only works when you have adequate warning about a potential storm. You could also choose to put up permanent earthen barriers around your building to ensure you are always ready for the worst-case scenario.
3. Increase water tightness.
Improving the seal around a building can keep storm damage to a minimum. This could include installing new windows and doors, replacing damaged siding or roofing and caulking around existing windows and doors. If water cannot get into a space, there won't be significant flooding.
4. Reorganize your space.
If you know the basement of your building floods during every heavy rain, you can reorganize how you use the space to minimize the damage done by the storm. Moving important documents and expensive equipment to higher levels may be enough flood proofing for your property.
As a building owner, you want to do everything you can to keep your property in the best shape possible. Putting preventative techniques in place to stop flood damage can help you keep your business operation even after severe storms.
All Is Not Lost After Water Damage: Tips for Cleaning and Restoring Building's Contents
9/26/2018 (Permalink)
School classroom cleanup in Bowling Green, KY
If your building was in a flood, you may be worried about how you're going to clean your building's contents and equipment. Not only is business equipment expensive, but every day the damage goes untouched is another day that you lose money. You can prevent monetary loss and minimize damage by contacting a Bowling Green, KY, water damage remediation team regarding your flooded company and its contents ASAP. The sooner you begin remediation efforts, the less damage your contents are likely to undergo and the sooner you can get back up and running.
Content Considerations
The first step of the water damage remediation process involves determining which building contents are worth saving and which need to be destroyed. When assessing the damage, your remediation team will give careful attention to the following materials:
- Drywall
- Paneling
- Insulation
- Pressboard
- Carpet
- Carpet padding
- Furniture
- Upholstered office partitions
If non-porous materials such as those mentioned above had been sitting in water for more than 24 hours, and if dry cleaning cannot save them, chances are they are unsalvageable. When a flooded company keeps water-saturated materials, it puts it at risk of mold growth and other costly issues.
Non-Porous Materials are Likely Salvageable
Not all materials are unsalvageable. Non-porous materials such as those mentioned below can likely be cleaned, saved and used once more:
- Stainless steel appliances
- Glass furniture and fixtures
- Granite surfaces
Some semi-porous materials such as tile and concrete may need to be given special consideration.
In some instances, if the water touched any of your office equipment or effected the wiring in your office, your team may recommend that you remove electronics and take them to a specialist for evaluation.
Dealing with a flooded company is never easy, but it doesn't have to be back or bank-breaking either. Contact your Oak Grove, KY, water damage remediation team for immediate and thorough assistance and for help minimizing the cost of damage as much as possible.

If you see signs of mold growth, smell a musty odor, find evidence of water leaks, or know of any past flooding, you should take immediate action.
What does mold look like?

• Black
• Brown

How can you tell if it's bad mold?

Flooding from a broken fire sprinkler system can be unexpected for you as a business owner.
There are many different sources of flooding that can affect your Bowling Green, KY, commercial building. Some causes are common; however, even those that happen less often can be just as damaging. For example, you may not anticipate malfunctioning ceiling sprinklers to cause a flood, but being prepared can help you protect your business in case the worst should happen. As you create a plan of action, there are a few strategies to consider that may reduce flood damage and allow your business to recover faster.

Trying to find your building’s water shutoff valve while the fire sprinklers are spraying water everywhere might prolong flooding and make matters worse. Locate your building’s main water valve ahead of time and map the fastest way to get to it. Give your managers a copy of the map so they can turn off the water if you are not there. The quicker you can cut off the water supply, the less serious the damage may be.

Being able to call for help when your building suffers water damage can give you peace of mind, even during the worst of floods. Having a flood damage and restoration company on call that can perform mitigation services may reduce widespread problems that stem from a sprinkler malfunction. Experienced technicians can drain water from vulnerable areas and prevent water from spreading to adjacent rooms.
3. Be Aware of Your Insurance Coverage
If you have business interruption insurance, take the time to fully understand what your policy covers so there are no unpleasant financial surprises after a fire sprinkler flood. Have your agent’s number posted in several different locations and call him or her right away after an incident so the claim can be filed as soon as possible.

Preparing Your Commercial Property for Extreme Winter Weather
3/30/2018 (Permalink)
Nowadays, you have access to a wealth of information right at your fingertips, so there’s no reason for the weather in Bowling Green, KY, to take you by surprise. The more uncertain matter is what to do in preparation for extreme weather once you know it’s on the way. A heavy downpour or snow storm could still cause problems, but a bit of planning may make things less difficult for your commercial property and the people who use it.
Stock the Necessities
The buildings you own and manage should be outfitted with emergency kits in case anyone is stranded, especially if the power has gone out. Their cases should be easy to move and well-stocked. There are some recommended items to include:
• Food and water
• Supplies for basic first aid
• Flashlights with extra batteries
• A whistle
Keep Your Building in Shape
The property itself should also be well-maintained to improve its safety in a snowstorm. If the structure of the roof is prone to collecting water and snow, hire a contractor to fix it and prevent collapse. Ensure that the walls are well-insulated. Be prepared to turn off the water valves if there’s a pipe burst. In extremely cold conditions, it’s vital to have an alternate heat source on hand, such as a fireplace or extra blankets.
Consider Your Employees
One of the best ways to make an emergency situation easier is to prevent one from arising in the first place. If you run a business and see an ominous forecast on the news, consider having your employees stay home for the day until it’s safer to travel. If remote work is an option, it may be wiser to have your staff work from home instead of coming into the office.
If your building suffers damage from a snowstorm despite your preparations, a professional service can help clean up, restoring safe conditions and allowing business to carry on as usual in a timely manner.
